about

Really, *I'm* not the one with a crush on the good Professor. No, really, I'm not. I blame the scansion - 'Marcus du Sautoy' is an intoxicating set of syllables with which to start a song, and by the time I'd added the epithet 'mathematician', the form and the style and the rest of the lyric were a done deal. This was debuted at Walthamstow Folk Club earlier this year, and it gets hammier and swoonier each time I perform it (nobody swoons like my bandmate Chantelle). Happy to get Lord Peter into a song at last, too.

lyrics

CLEVER MEN

(NB: Please be aware - this song is a work of fiction
How the syllables fell was simply out of my ... jurisdiction...)

Marcus du Sautoy: mathematician
He’s got the looks and the erudition
But my heart belongs - my heart belongs
To Professor Brian Cox

Physics is so much more than the numbers, the
Universe dances while our language lumbers
Around – and that’s why my heart belongs
To Professor Brian Cox.

Oh - how I adore a clever, clever man
(oh Leonardo, my Leonardo)
And one who’ll explain so that I can understand
(Things that I did not know...)

Derren Brown’s scary – I couldn’t trust him
Mr Heston Blumenthal? That tastes disgusting
Dr Brian May – I’d give him the time of day,
‘Cause a guitar god with a PhD rocks!

Particle physics’ own superhero
Electrons collide whenever he’s near – oh
My heart belongs, yeah my heart belongs
To Professor Brian Cox!

And don’t I adore a clever, clever guy
(Lord Peter Wimsey, oh! Lord Peter Wimsey)
A thinker for sure, and easy on the eye
(What a shame he’s not real...)

Marcus du Sautoy: mathematician
You’ve got the looks, but you've got competition
‘Cause my heart belongs (to the professor)
Yeah, my heart belongs (Oh, I’m saying yes sir!)
My heart belongs to Professor Brian Cox!

Talis Kimberley UK

"I'm a songwriter and singer; my songs are spun from folklore and history, stirred well with a hazel wand and served with cake. I'll sing you ravens and bones and the story behind the story, I'll sing you bread and apples, ghosts and knitting, and bring you home with a pocketful of feathers and hope"
